Physical layer evolution for GSM/EDGE

چکیده
EDGE has enabled the GSM network to offer third generation services as part of the UMTS core network. This is due to the introduction of 8PSK modulation and the recent specification of interfaces from the GERAN to the UMTS core network. This paper studies further improvements to the spectral efficiency and capacity of EDGE through the use of more sophisticated adaptive modulation schemes based on QAM, and the use of novel turbo coding schemes. Furthermore, this work considers a novel transmit diversity scheme adapted for use in dispersive channels. We provide performance results for the enhanced system showing tremendous gains. We also use theoretical predictions of outage analysis to predict the gain in performance obtained by the use of higher order modulations and transmit diversity. The gains from theoretical predictions match our simulations almost exactly. Keywords—EDGE, GSM, Transmit Diversity, Space-time Codes, QAM, turbo codes, DFSE, Cutoff rates.

EDGE: enhanced data rates for GSM and TDMA/136 evolution
Two of the major second generation standards, GSM and TDMA/1361, have built the foundation to offer a common global radio access for data services. Through use of a common physical layer, EDGE (Enhanced Data rates for GSM and TDMA/136 Evolution), both standards will have the same evolutionary path towards providing third-generation services. EDGE is currently subject to standardization in TIA T...
متن کاملEmulation of Multiple EDGE Physical Layers Using a Reconfigurable Radio Platform
A novel architecture for the testing of enhanced data rates for GSM evolution (EDGE) networks is proposed, in which a reconfigurable radio platform is used to implement up to 16 EDGE physical layers in a RF baseband module (RFBBM). When the RFBBM is used in conjunction with a line server unit (LSU), a complete mobile station emulator (MSE) is formed. In this paper, the implementation and interf...

With an increasing demand on multimedia services, a design of high-speed data networks is an important task in the wireless mobile environment. EDGE (Enhanced Data rates for Global Evolution) is the next step in the evolution of GSM and IS-136 offering high data rate capabilities in the existing GSM spectrum [1] [2]. With the introduction of EDGE in GSM phase 2+ existing services like GPRS (bas...
متن کاملHigher Data Rates in GSM / EDGE with Multicarrier
One of the potential future development areas in the GSM/EDGE standard is the increase of user peak transfer rates. For a wide area coverage system like GSM/EDGE, the design of higher data rate scheme can be based on the transmission on multiple carriers, instead of one single carrier. This work evaluates the feasibility of a multicarrier concept in GSM/EDGE and aims at minimizing modifications...
متن کاملA Performance Study of GSM and GSM/EDGE Systems for Different Multipath Fading Channels
This study investigates the performance of GSM and Enhanced Data rate for GSM Evolution (EDGE) mobile communication systems operating in both Additive White Gaussian Noise (AWGN) channel and Rayleigh fading channels. This investigation presents the characteristics of the bit error rate (BER) for conventional GSM and GSM/EDGE MCS-1 and GSM/EDGE MCS-7 systems. These characteristics are compared f...
